Who’s Afraid of the West Cherry Orchard?: A Classic American Play in an Active Quiznos
Before Fringe was theaters and beer tents, it was plays put up in empty storefronts and warehouses. That was the plan for the theater group in this play, who planned to put up a “classic piece of the american theatrical canon” in the recently closed Quiznos storefront. Except, the neighborhood was recently revitalized and the Quiznos is, in fact, still active. What follows is a slapstick comedy, where actors desperately try to perform a serious play in spite of faulty toasters, frequent customers, and even the quiznos Spongmonkeys. The play within a play is an original, but based on the plays that take up the most space in traditional american theaters. Through shredded lettuce and chewed scenery Active Quiznos asks which is more ridiculous, the setting or the play?
